I am literally in tears reading this. At the layers of pain: the cruelty of administering punishment to children who have no one to protect them, the cruelty of children having to delouse all by themselves, the cruelty of keeping them in cages on cement floors. https://t.co/kB0krdmuqa

Concentration Camps in the U.S.: Andrea Pitzer Decries Tent Cities for Detaining Kids Without Trial | Democracy Now! (Jul 01 2019) <Click-to-Tweet>

Keywords: concentration camp, mass detention, u.s., japanese americans, citizenship, camp, other people, court level, other things, new child camp, camp history, detention, detention camps

Abstract

By this definition, the new child camp established in Tornillo, Texas, is a concentration camp. Well, this is my worry about the camps at the border. And they definitely started as refugee camps. So these communities were shoved together in these same camps. They evolved into these enemy alien camps. But there are other examples. First of all, this is just limiting it to U.S. citizens, so does that OK concentration camps for other people? This is the kind of stuff we see where you end up with concentration camp regimes. And there were also almost four decades of concentration camps, things that were called concentration camps — civilian detention on the basis of identity — that happened before that.

The lawyers are part of a team of doctors and advocates that warned last week of what they said were major health and hygiene problems at Customs and Border Protection facilities in Texas following visits to the facilities. The detention centers have become a political volleyball, with critics likening them to concentration camps and torture facilities, while supporters say they're necessary to an effective immigration policy. The Court has already issued several orders that have set forth in detail what it considers to be violations of the Flores Agreement," Gee wrote in her Friday ruling.

Her declaration was filed with a court in Los Angeles that oversees a long-standing settlement agreement over custody conditions for migrant children caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Some of the children traveled alone to the U.S. It is obvious that the dignity and well-being of children is not even an afterthought in the design of the center, ” Sevier said. Keywords: mexico, physical custody, children, carolyn cole / los angeles times, individuals, asylum, minors, many unaccompanied minor applications, the united states, asylum division, uscis, unaccompanied minors, asylum officers

Abstract

A new policy may strip unaccompanied minors of their protected status. Under this new policy, which rescinds an Obama-era memorandum, USCIS officers will independently determine whether an individual was an unaccompanied minor when they filed their application. At that time, asylum officers made “ independent factual inquiries ” to determine whether individuals filing applications met the criteria to be designated as unaccompanied minors and were thus under the jurisdiction of USCIS. The decision dealt with whether USCIS or an immigration judge has initial jurisdiction over the asylum application of an individual who was previously determined to be an unaccompanied minor but had turned 18 before filing their application. Unaccompanied minors are currently exempt from the standing one-year deadline to file asylum applications.

However, shelters and foster families are a critical need for other children and families. This would be run through your local child welfare organization, and would be required by the Office of Refugee Resettlement. These children's rights should be protected.

There were children at this facility who came across with parents and were separated from parents. There were other children at the facility who came across with other adult family members. But they were not unaccompanied children. Things have always been horrendous in Border Patrol facilities, especially for children.

Now, the Trump administration appears to be increasing the scope and severity of its immigrant detention scheme by potentially detaining immigrants at Guantanamo Bay. I ’ve been to Guantanamo. It is certainly no place for children. But sending kids to Guantanamo is uniquely dangerous. The Trump administration might argue they have no rights at Guantanamo at all. History tells us that politicians might excuse or willfully turn a blind eye to abuses that happen at Guantanamo. Guantanamo ’s longer history helps explain why. More than 45,000 people were taken to Guantanamo and held in tent cities. There ’s a horrific American tradition of holding people at Guantanamo unlawfully.

But the officer “ was n’t even allowed to make an argument ” that the asylum seeker should be allowed to stay in the US to pursue his case. The role that asylum officers play in the MPP process is very different from the one they typically play. Under MPP, though, migrants are automatically allowed to apply for asylum before a judge in the US — the asylum officer just determines whether they are sent back to Mexico in the meantime. As a result, both asylum officers and the migrants they interview are unprepared. The asylum seekers they were speaking to were even less ready: And it ’s not a standard that asylum officers are familiar with. Abstract

Sierra Club v. Trump — Challenge to Trump ’s National Emergency Declaration to Construct a Border Wall Updated : Add your name In February 2019, the ACLU filed a lawsuit challenging President Trump ’s emergency powers declaration to secure funds to build a wall along the southern border. If border wall construction is carried out as directed under the president ’s emergency declaration, it would harm communities living along the border, endanger wildlife, and have devastating impacts on the environment. The hyper-militarization of the border wall, accelerated by the president ’s declaration, would increase anti- immigrant sentiment and marginalize communities of color even further. The 2019 Appropriations Act passed by Congress explicitly rejected President Trump ’s $ 5.7 billion demand for a border wall and forbade construction in certain areas, including carve-outs for wildlife areas.

Abstract

Print Update 6/24/19: President Trump has announced plans to unleash a wave of ICE raids across the country to conduct mass arrests and deportations. The Department of Homeland Security is the Trump administration's key tool for terrorizing immigrants. DHS is responsible for inflicting heinous abuses on children in its custody – long before they started tear gassing them and ripping them away from their families and detaining them as part of the vile family separation policy. The department has also unleashed ICE and CBP to lawlessly antagonize immigrant communities throughout this country in our homes, workplaces, and daily commutes. We call on Congress to refuse to bend to Trump ’s abusive immigration policies. We wo n't allow our taxpayer dollars to fund DHS's abuse of immigrants. Related Stories

Abstract

This law makes crossing the border without legal authorization a federal misdemeanor. And they claimed that necessitated placing the parents in U.S. Marshals custody and sometimes in federal prison, while their children were transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services. Since 2005, though, criminal prosecutions for unauthorized border crossing have skyrocketed, and in 2017 and 2018,   they comprised 57 percent of all federal criminal case filings nationwide. That ’s more than white collar prosecutions, more than drug-related prosecutions, and more than weapons prosecutions. Like so much of the criminal system, the system under which migrants are prosecuted for crossing the border is replete with due process problems. These prosecutions have a profound human cost, and they also cost U.S. taxpayers.

Abstract

The Immigration System Is Inhumane. Federal immigration agents are conducting workplace and community raids across the country, arresting immigrants at check-in appointments and green card interviews, and targeting courthouses and Greyhound bus stations. But the Trump administration is not alone in its responsibility for the past two years of brutal immigration enforcement. ’s mandate will be to overhaul our immigration system and build one that upholds our values. An ICE detainer is a request to a state or local law enforcement agency to jail someone until the person can be taken into federal immigration custody. Once arrested, immigrants are jailed in a detention system that has grown in size by 60 % in just two years. The ACLU is asking for a commitment to decreasing immigration detention by at least 75 %.

Immigrant Kids Keep Dying in CBP Detention Centers, and DHS Wo Their deaths reveal just how dire the conditions are under which U.S. Customs and Border Protection ( CBP ) are holding hundreds of children. CBP has dealt with even higher levels of border crossers in the past and has 17 times   the budget it did in 1990. Appropriators are currently deciding the next budget for DHS, including ICE and CBP, and they should ensure the agencies are not granted any more funding while children and adults continue to be abused and die while in custody. The word ‘ undocumented ’ is not based in U.S. code and should not be used to describe someone ’s illegal presence in the country, ” the email says. The directive is the Trump administration ’s latest rule about how the government talks about immigrants. But their preferred term, “ illegal alien, ” is n’t very prominent in the U.S. legal code either, according to fact-checker   Politifact Texas. In the Immigration and Nationality Act, “ illegal alien ” is only used to refer to immigrants who have been convicted of a felony.

Abstract

Media fight access restrictions on child detention centers June 26, 2018 Print The children at the center of the national debate over President Donald Trump ’s immigration policy have been heard about but rarely seen. News organizations say they are pushing back every day against Trump administration restrictions on access to facilities where children separated from their parents are being held. Audio obtained by ProPublica of crying children at a federal facility was influential before Trump changed his policy — even though there were no visuals. Children are seen in neat lines and in what looks like government-issued clothing, but no faces are seen. I wonder what else is there Ortiz said the handouts also raise questions, noting that the children seen are boys. There are no pictures of girls, ” he said. Where are they? ”

President Trump has faced immense political pressure to end the separation of migrant families at the border. I did n’t like the sight or the feeling of families being separated. ” ” Mr. Marriott said that “ reunification is always the goal ” and that the agency “ is working toward that ” for the children separated from their families because of Mr. Trump ’s policy. Abstract

An unapologetic President Donald Trump defended his administration ’s border-protection policies Monday in the face of rising national outrage over the forced separation of migrant children from their parents. Calling for tough action against illegal immigration, Trump declared the U.S. “ will not be a migrant camp ” on his watch. The children are being held separately from parents who are being prosecuted under the administration ’s “ zero-tolerance ” policy for illegal border crossings. In fact, it was Trump ’s administration that broke with longstanding practice of processing migrant families in civil, rather than criminal, proceedings that allow families to be held together. One cage had 20 children inside. We do not want to separate parents from their children, ” he said.

Politics Are Children Being Kept in' Cages' at the Border? But are those cages? One cage had 20 children inside. But this is abuse of the language, too. The point is that these children are incarcerated. The cages are n’t wholly new. What is different now is that the children being held are being forcibly separated from their parents at the border. the Washington Examiner reports that there could be 30,000 such children in custody by August. This is violence to the English language. The claim is that the policy is aimed at adults, not at children, but the effect is the same. The laws are the laws. I'm a developer, how can I help? I'm not a coder, how can I help? There is no monetization strategy for this. How will the verified report reach the local communities impacted by the sweeps / raids? Will this be an automatic process or human-managed / vetted / supervised? Abstract

Families who have been admitted into the United States as asylum-seekers need to travel from Phoenix to their families or sponsors across the country while they await immigration proceedings. Instead, ICE agents drive buses of families directly to local churches who indicate they have the temporary capacity to receive the families and assist with travel arrangements. These families need basic necessities, such as food, bathing, and medical attention. Furthermore, these families are required to report to immigration offices across the country to proceed with the asylum-seeking process, despite not being provided with organized travel arrangements. However, these organizations can no longer keep up with the demand, and ICE has started repeatedly and consistently dropping off busloads of asylum-seeking families at Phoenix bus stations.

Abstract

Statement of ABA President Bob Carlson, re: Detention of immigrant children in poor conditions Share this: WASHINGTON, June 25, 2019 – The American Bar Association is appalled by credible reports of hundreds of children being held in unsafe and unhealthy conditions in violation of federal and state law, court settlements and common decency. This week, the American public learned that children, including infants, were being held for up to weeks at a time in overcrowded federal facilities that lack the most basic of human necessities. The law requires that children who are held must be transferred to the custody of Health and Human Services within 72 hours. We urge Congress to pass supplemental appropriations to ensure the appropriate treatment and care of unaccompanied immigrant children in government custody.

Abstract

We resist policies and policy proposals that target and aim to deport millions of undocumented immigrants and discriminate against Black, Indigenous, Muslim, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ people. What is a sanctuary city? A “ sanctuary city ” means that there are policies in place to limit cooperation between local police and federal immigration officials ( ICE ), to protect basic human and civil rights of the city ’s residents. However, because there are some loopholes in our sanctuary policy and because there are so many federal agencies in DC that are not obligated to follow it, many immigrant DC residents – documented and undocumented – are being unlawfully deported. A sanctuary city should not comply with destructive immigration and registration policies.
